Martin Hannett -The Redemption at Gorrilla

Martin Hannett was born in Manchester in 1948. He first came to the attention of the music industry in 1977, when, as Martin Zero, he produced the independent punk record, The Buzzcocks’ Spiral Scratch.

He was an original partner/director at Factory Records with Tony Wilson and is famous for his trademark sound, which was most apparent on Joy Division’s debut album Unknown Pleasures in 1979 and its follow-up, Closer in 1980.

Post factory, his career went into decline due to his heavy drinking and drug use and he died in April 1991, at the age of 42.

An in-depth documentary on Martin’s life has been made and tomorrow night at Gorilla, there will be a preview of the film, as well as performances from musicians who shared the stage or studio with him and an exhibition of related artefacts, including synths, studio gear and images.

More information about the event and tickets are available at Gorilla.
