Sugar Hill Gang at Gorilla

The Sugarhill Gang are the iconic rap group most commonly known for the huge party hit ‘Rapper’s Delight’, which came out way back in 1979 but still gets played ubiquitously today.

The trio were assembled by producer Sylvia Robinson, who founded Sugar Hill Records with record mogul and husband Joe Robinson. The group and record company were named after the Sugar Hill, Manhattan neighbourhood.

The Sugarhill Gang were completely screwed by their record label over the years, and have the dubious distinction of being not only groundbreakers but a cautionary tale as well. The trio went from sold-out worldwide tours to dire financial straits within a year, and the subsequent three decades have brought much in the way of litigious goings on. This unbelievable story is revealed in Roger Paradiso’s documentary, “I Want My Name Back”.

Tickets for tonight are still available from Gorilla.
